Referendum, polls on same day: BNP slams CA in afternoon, thanks him by night
Earlier in the day, BNP leader Salahuddin Ahmed accused the chief adviser of violating the July National Charter that he himself had signed earlier
The BNP has extended thanks to Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus for reaffirming the plan to hold the 13th national election in the first half of February and for announcing that a referendum on the July Charter would take place on the same day.
In a statement tonight (13 November), issued after the party's Standing Committee emergency meeting, the party urged the government and the Election Commission to hold a referendum seeking public consent on the July National Charter, which was signed on 17 October based on national consensus, and to arrange the next national election as soon as possible.
The meeting, held this evening (13 November) at the BNP chairperson's office in Gulshan, was presided over by the party's acting chairman Tarique Rahman.
Earlier in the day, in his immediate reaction to the chief adviser's national address, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed accused Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus of violating the July National Charter that he himself had signed earlier.
The BNP leader said, "The chief adviser has breached the charter that he signed on 17 October at the South Plaza of the National Parliament. By his speech today, he has clearly violated that document."
Criticising the referendum question pattern, Salahuddin said, "This is a leading question — people are being forced to either say 'Yes' to everything or 'No' to everything. They're even saying that the proportion of 'yes' votes will determine the number of seats in the upper house.
During a national address, the chief adviser today announced that the 13th national election and a referendum on the July National Charter proposals will be held simultaneously in the first half of February next year.
He also announced that the Advisory Council of the interim government has approved the July National Charter (Reform of Constitution) Implementation Order 2025.
