Aslam Chowdhury, Sayeed Al Noman get BNP tickets after reshuffle in Ctg
Kazi Md Salahuddin has been dropped as the BNP candidate for Chattogram-4, while Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has been shifted to Chattogram-11
The BNP has changed its candidates in two parliamentary constituencies in Chattogram, nominating former joint secretary general Aslam Chowdhury and Jatiyatabadi Paat (jute) Sramik Dal President Sayeed Al Noman for the upcoming election.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir handed over party nomination certificates to the two leaders today (27 December).
Aslam Chowdhury has been named the BNP candidate for Chattogram-4 (Sitakunda), while Sayeed Al Noman, son of the party's late vice chairman Abdullah Al Noman, has been nominated for Chattogram-10, comprising Doublemooring, Pahartali, Halishahar and Khulshi areas.
The decision marks a reversal from the party's initial announcement on 4 December, when Kazi Md Salahuddin, former joint convener of the BNP's North district unit, was named candidate for Chattogram-4.
The move sparked widespread discontent among local party leaders and activists, leading to protests and blockades by supporters of Aslam Chowdhury.
In Chattogram-10, BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury was initially nominated. The constituency, however, has long been associated with the late Abdullah Al Noman, whose son Sayeed Al Noman had been actively seeking the nomination.
Following the change, Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury has been shifted to Chattogram-11 (Bandar–Patenga), a seat he has represented multiple times in the past and from which he served as a minister.
Expressing gratitude after receiving the nomination, Sayeed Al Noman told TBS that the party's trust was both an honour and a responsibility.
"InshaAllah, I will work tirelessly to uphold that trust and to realise the just rights and aspirations of the people of Chattogram-10," he said.
With the latest changes, BNP has now announced candidates in 15 of Chattogram's 16 parliamentary constituencies. The party has yet to declare its nominee for Chattogram-14 (Chandanaish).
BNP Central Organising Secretary (Chattogram division) Mahbuber Rahman Shamim confirmed the candidate reshuffle, adding that a decision on Chattogram-14 is still pending.
