Anti-election forces likely behind Musabbir’s killing: Salahuddin
He also called on the interim government to take advance preparations to prevent such incidents from recurring.
Forces who oppose the upcoming elections were likely behind the killing of Swechchhasebak Dal leader Azizur Rahman Musabbir, BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has alleged.
"Musabbir was killed in a premeditated manner. Forces opposed to elections may be involved in the incident. This is part of a well-planned conspiracy," the BNP leader told journalists after visiting Musabbir's residence in the capital's Panthapath today (9 January).
Calling for a fair and impartial investigation into the killing, Salahuddin said, "We have urged the Ministry of Home Affairs to ensure a proper probe and take appropriate action."
He also called on the interim government to take advance preparations to prevent such incidents from recurring. Announcing that the party would take responsibility for Musabbir's family, Salahuddin said BNP would bear all responsibilities for the lifetime needs of Musabbir's wife and children.
On the night of 7 January, Musabbir was shot by unidentified assailants in West Tejturi Bazar area of the capital.
Urging the public and party leaders and activists to remain vigilant so that no one can obstruct the election, the BNP leader said attempts to derail the polls through such incidents would not succeed. "Even if anti-election forces are trying to sabotage the election through such acts, the people will resist them," he added.
Speaking on the overall law and order situation, Salahuddin said the fallen autocratic regime is trying to disrupt the election process and that a series of conspiracies is underway to that end.
He stressed that law enforcement agencies must suppress such plots firmly before they are carried out.
