6 injured as BNP factions clash in Narayanganj over dominance; 8 detained
Several houses were vandalised during the violence
At least six people were injured as two factions of the BNP clashed in Narayanganj's Fatullah this afternoon (10 January) over establishing dominance in the area.
Crude bombs were exploded during the clash near Shiachar Hajibari intersection under Fatullah Model Police Station, causing panic among local residents.
Several houses were vandalised during the violence.
The identities of the injured could not be confirmed immediately.
Confirming the matter, Fatullah Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Mannan told The Business Standard that eight people from both groups have been detained.
"We recovered marijuana and heroin from some of the detainees, and fragments of exploded crude bombs were also seized. A case is being prepared in connection with the incident," he added.
According to police, the clash stemmed from a long-running dispute between Yunus Master, president of the Fatullah Thana Tanti Dal, and Zainal Abedin, former president of the Kutubpur Union Jubo Dal.
Following reports of violence, members of the police, army, and RAB conducted a joint operation and detained eight people, including a district-level Chhatra Dal leader.
The detainees are former Kutubpur Union Jubo Dal president Zainal Abedin, former Narayanganj district Chhatra Dal organising secretary Mehedi Hasan Dolon, and seven others named Akash, Jewel, Riazul, Rajib, Jihad, and Rashid.
Eyewitnesses said the rivalry between the two groups had been ongoing for a long time, centring on control over drug trade, factory scrap businesses, and land grabbing in the area. Tensions escalated from noon today, eventually turning into violent clashes involving sharp weapons and crude bombs.
Law enforcement agencies later brought the situation under control.
