Local police say they are working to identify those involved and take legal action against them.
At least 12 people were injured, including three who suffered wounds from spear-like objects, during a clash between two rival groups over the lease of a cattle market, traders' association elections and local dominance in Sirajdikhan upazila of Munshiganj today (22 May).
Sirajdikhan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Abdul Hannan said police rushed to the scene after receiving information and brought the situation under control.
The situation is currently normal, he said, adding that police are working to identify those involved and take legal action against them.
According to locals and police, tensions had been running high for a long time between the Shahid Baul group and a rival faction linked to Khokon Sarkar, specifically the Moktar Hossain and Suruzzaman Sarkar group, over control of the local cattle market lease and influence.
The dispute escalated this morning when people from both sides engaged in clashes using locally made weapons.
Chases, counter-chases and brick throwing were also reported during the violence.
Of the wounded, Shakil Sarkar, 27, Asfak Sarkar, 48, and Hriday Sarkar, 25, sustained serious injuries during the clash and were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for treatment.
Another seven to nine injured people were treated locally.
Following the incident, tension spread across the area before police brought the situation under control, with additional police personnel deployed to prevent further violence.
Baluchar Union Parishad Chairman Awlad Hossain said the clash mainly stemmed from a dispute over local dominance. The situation is now calm, he added.
