36 parties, not just BNP, want election by December: Khaled Hossain Shyamal
“The chief adviser’s statement that only one party wants elections in December is inaccurate. BNP is joined by 36 political parties in demanding polls by the end of this year,” said Shyamal
Khaled Hossain Mahbub Shyamal, central BNP's secretary for economic affairs, has said that not only BNP but 36 political parties want the next national election to be held by December this year.
He made the comment while speaking to reporters after offering Eid-ul-Adha prayers at the district Eidgah in Brahmanbaria this morning (7 June).
"The chief adviser's statement that only one party wants elections in December is inaccurate. BNP is joined by 36 political parties in demanding polls by the end of this year," said Shyamal.
"Our standing committee sat for a meeting last night. Our position remains firm that elections must take place by December. The nation's expectations have not been met through the chief adviser's address," he added.
Criticising the interim government's pace on reforms, he said, "From 5 August last year to this coming December is ample time. One year is enough for reforms if the intention is sincere. Unfortunately, the interim government seems to be wasting time, which raises serious questions."
Earlier in the day, the main Eid congregation was held at 8am at the district Eidgah in Kazipara. The prayer was led by Maulana Abu Bakar, a hadith scholar from Jamia Islamia Yunusia Madrasa.
Among those present were Brahmanbaria Deputy Commissioner Mohammad Didarul Alam, district Jamaat Ameer Mobarak Hossain, district BNP General Secretary Sirajul Islam, leaders from various political and social organisations, and muslims from all walks of life.
