10 injured as supporters of BNP nomination aspirant attacked in Cumilla
Supporters of BNP’s nominated candidate from the same constituency, Abul Kalam, reportedly launched an attack with local weapons
At least 10 people, including BNP nomination aspirant Samira Azim Dola, daughter of former lawmaker Anwarul Azim, were injured in an alleged attack during a campaign event in the Changaon area of Cumilla's Laksam upazila this afternoon (9 October).
Laksam Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Naznin Sultana said police brought the situation under control soon after the incident.
"No written complaint has been filed yet. Additional police have been deployed at the scene," she added.
The injured were taken to the Laksam Upazila Health Complex and other nearby hospitals for treatment, according to police.
Local sources said Samira Azim Dola, who is seeking BNP's nomination from the Laksam–Monoharganj (Cumilla-9) constituency, went to the area for a pre-announced campaign programme. During the event, supporters of BNP's nominated candidate from the same constituency, Abul Kalam, reportedly launched an attack with local weapons.
A chase and counter-chase ensued between the two groups, leaving at least 10 people injured, including Samira Azim Dola and BNP leader Abdur Rahman Badol.
Following the incident, Samira Azim Dola told reporters, "We were conducting our programme peacefully when Abul Kalam's men suddenly attacked us. The attack took place in the area of Abul Kalam's personal assistant."
Attempts to contact BNP's nominated candidate and the party's central Industry Affairs Secretary Abul Kalam for comment were unsuccessful.
