Dozens injured, 2 shot as 3-day-long gang rivalry turns Cumilla locality into 'war zone'
Footage captures individuals armed with large knives and at least one person discharging a firearm, accompanied by the frequent sound of glass shattering as stones hit nearby homes and shops
A series of violent clashes between two rival groups has left at least 30 people injured and two others with gunshot wounds in the South Chartha area of Cumilla city.
The intermittent violence, which began on Thursday (23 April) and lasted till yesterday afternoon (25 April), has sparked widespread panic across the locality as youths were seen brandishing sharp weapons and firearms in broad daylight.
The conflict reportedly originated from a minor altercation between youths from the neighbouring Thirapukurpar and Jinar Pukurpar areas. The dispute quickly escalated into a full-scale confrontation, with residents splitting into two factions: the "Nayan Group" representing Jinar Pukurpar and the "Swapan Group" from Thirapukurpar.
The ensuing chase and counter-chase transformed the residential streets into what some described as a "war zone," leading to the vandalism of several business establishments.
Footage of the violence has since gone viral on social media.
In a 70-second video, dozens of youths wearing helmets are seen pelting their opponents with stones.
The footage also captures individuals armed with large knives and at least one person discharging a firearm, accompanied by the frequent sound of glass shattering as stones hit nearby homes and shops.
Local sources told The Business Standard that the escalation drew in many residents after their businesses were attacked, further intensifying the chaos.
Touhidul Anwar, officer-in-charge (OC) of Cumilla Kotwali Model Police Station, stated that the clashes were a result of a dispute over establishing territorial dominance.
"One side has already lodged a formal complaint with the police. We have deployed personnel at the scene, and the situation is currently under control," the OC added.
Police had been deployed after the initial escalation. However, as soon as the policemen withdrew, violence erupted again.
Fearing further escalations, a significant police presence remains deployed in the South Chartha area today (26 April) to prevent any fresh outbreaks of hostilities.
