A Dhaka court on Saturday allowed police to interrogate seven, who were arrested yesterday from processions brought out in protest of writer Mushtaq Ahmed's death, at the jail gate.
Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court's Magistrate Morshed Al Mamun Bhuyan gave the permission today after Shahbag Thana police produced them before the court seeking seven-day remand for each in an attempt to murder case filed by police, reports daily Prothom Alo.
The remand appeal said the accused need to be interrogated taking in remand to identify those who provoked the attack on police and remained fugitive.
However, the court rejected the remand petition and permitted police to quiz them in front of the jail gate.
The investigating officer of the case is Shahbagh Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Shahidul Islam Shahid. The seven arrested are Tamjid Haider of Narayanganj, Nazir Amin Chowdhury of Kishoreganj, ASM Tanzimur Rahman of Noakhali, Akib Ahmed, a student of Dhaka University, Arafat Saad of Barisal, Nazifa Jannat of Laxmipur and Jayati Chakraborty of Patuakhali.
The Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore and writer Mushtaq Ahmed in Kakrail and Lalmatia on 5 May, 2020 under the Digital Security Act for posting anti-government posts on Facebook.
On 5 May, RAB-3 warrant officer Abu Bakar Siddique filed the case with Ramna Police Station against 11 people, including cartoonist Ahmed Kabir Kishore.
The case statement read that the accused published various posts conveying misinformation and rumours on the Facebook page called "I am Bangladeshi" – to tarnish the image or reputation of the state, spread confusion, or degrade the law and order situation in the country.
Although two people were released on bail in that case, the bail applications of Mushtaq and Kishore were rejected six times.
