Plea seeks postponement of Dhaka city polls

Supreme Court lawyer Ashok Kumar Ghosh has filed a petition with the Appellate Division against a High Court order that paved the way to hold polls in two Dhaka city corporations on January 30.

The application sought postponement of the elections and also to set a new polling date due to Saraswati Puja on the same day.

The hearing on the plea could be held in the Appellate Division Chamber Bench next Sunday.

On January 14, Justice JBM Hasan and Justice Md Khairul Alam's High Court bench dismissed a writ petition which sought directions to change the polling day of the two city corporation elections as Hindu community's Saraswati Puja will also be held on the day.

The court in its order said, "SSC exam will start soon, so there is no way to postpone the elections."

The court further said, "The government earlier declared a public holiday for Saraswati Puja on January 29. No one, including the writ petitioner, objected."

Advocate Rana Das Gupta and lawyer Ashok Kumar Ghosh argued for the writ in the court. Lawyer Touhidul Islam was present on behalf of the Election Commission.
