The outgoing Japanese Ambassador to Bangladesh Hiroyasu Izumi on Sunday met with President Abdul Hamid at Bangabhaban in the afternoon.

Hamid thanked the Japanese envoy for his successful completion of his tenure in Bangladesh during the meeting.

Press secretary to the President Joynal Abedin briefed the reporters after the meeting.

The President said Japan recognized Bangladesh right after its independence in February 1972 and has since then nurtured bilateral friendship.

Subsequently the bilateral ties got a new height after the historic maiden visit of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman in 1973, he added.

Hamid said Japan contributed a lot to rebuild the war-ravaged Bangladesh and since then Japan has become a development partner of Bangladesh.

"Japanese investment in different sectors has accelerated the development in socio-economic sectors here," Hamid mentioned and hoped that this trend would continue in the future.

Referring to high-level visit exchange between Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her counterpart Shinzo Abe, the president said it helped carry the bilateral ties to a new height.

The Envoy said that Japan is keen to provide long-term cooperation for country's socio-economic development.

"The development potential of Bangladesh is very bright. Japan is keen to provide necessary cooperation to Bangladesh's socioeconomic development for long-term basis," Japanese envoy told the President during the meeting.

The outgoing envoy also expressed his gratitude to the President and the Bangladesh government for providing all necessary supports to him during his stay here.

Secretaries concerned to the President were also present in the meeting.
