Law enforcers arrested 343 people across the country on Monday (10 February) as part of "Operation Devil Hunt", according to the Police Headquarters.
Meanwhile, in Gazipur, police arrested 100 leaders and activists of Awami League (AL) and its affiliated organisations, including a former MP, during raids as part of the operation between yesterday and this morning.
Officials this morning said Gazipur Metropolitan Police detained 79 individuals across eight police stations, while Gazipur District Police arrested 21, including former AL lawmaker Chayan Islam, across five police stations.
On the first day of the operation, 81 people were arrested in Gazipur, bringing the total number of arrests in the last two days to 181.
GMP Deputy Police Commissioner (CT-SB) Md Alamgir Hossain said, "A total of 79 people were arrested on the second day across eight police stations under GMP. Among them, 11 were from Tongi East Police Station, eight from Tongi West, six from Gacha, and five from Pubail Police Station."
He added that 41 individuals had been arrested on the first day, bringing the total number of arrests in the metropolitan area to 120.
Gazipur District Superintendent of Police Chowdhury Md Jaber Sadek stated that 21 Awami League leaders and activists, including former MP Chayan Islam, were arrested on last night during operations in five police station areas.
"Among them, five, including Chayan Islam, were arrested in Sreepur Police Station, three in Kapasia, four in Kaliganj, three in Kaliakair, and six in Joydebpur," he said. "Legal action is being taken against them under the existing laws."
He further noted that the district police had arrested 40 individuals on the first day of the operation, bringing the district's total number of arrests to 61 over two days.
107 arrested over reported attack on students
Meanwhile, a total of 107 individuals have been arrested in Gazipur over the past three days as of 8pm on Monday in a case filed over the reported attack and beating of anti-discrimination students at the house of former liberation war minister Mozammel Haque in Gazipur.
The arrestees include relatives of the former minister, Gazipur Sadar Metro Police Station's newly appointed officer-in-charge Md Mehedi confirmed to The Business Standard on Monday night. "They have revealed crucial information when interrogated."
The government launched "Operation Devil Hunt," a nationwide security operation, on 8 February following a violent attack on students and civilians in Gazipur on the night of 7 February.
As of last night, security forces arrested 1,308 individuals across the country as part of the security drive, which Home Adviser Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury said will continue until all "devils" are exposed to justice and "not a single devil is left".
Of the arrested, 274 were held from metropolitan areas, while 1,034 were arrested from other areas, said Enamul Haque Sagar, assistant inspector general (media and PR) at the Police Headquarters yesterday.
