Nursing students protest in Bagerhat demanding graduate equivalent recognition
Nursing students in Bagerhat held a human chain and protest programme on Saturday, demanding that the Diploma in Nursing Science and Midwifery and the Diploma in Midwifery courses be recognised as equivalent to a graduate degree.
The day-long programme, organised by the Bangladesh Diploma Nurses Union, Bagerhat district branch, took place in front of Bagerhat District Hospital from 9am today (27 April).
Over 400 students from Bagerhat Nursing Institute and Nargis Memorial Nursing Institute participated in the protest.
During the demonstration, nursing students Kutub Uddin, Masadur Rahman, Shawon Biswas, Nusrat Jahan, and Shankari Biswas, among others, addressed the gathering.
The students said that after passing the HSC examination, they are admitted to nursing courses, where they study for three years under an English medium curriculum. Despite this, they are awarded a certificate equivalent only to an HSC qualification.
They demanded that the Diploma in Nursing Science and Midwifery and the Diploma in Midwifery be given graduate equivalent status.
They further stated that their movement would continue until their demands are met.
