Transport services will remain suspended on 18 roads in Khulna district for 24 hours from Friday evening to Saturday evening.

Khulna Transport Owners' Association has taken the decision to avoid any untoward incident centering BNP's assembly on Saturday.

Anwar Hossain Sona, joint secretary of Khulna District Bus Minibus Coach Owners' Association, said, "There is a possibility of unwanted chaos from BNP's assembly."

"This move has been taken to avoid such a situation. However, it is not a strike," he added.

Meanwhile, Khulna City unit BNP President Nazrul Islam Monju said public transport, including boats and trawlers have been declared suspended in order to foil BNP's assembly on Saturday.

Besides, their leaders and activists are being arrested.  Stopping public transport cannot avert BNP from holding the assembly, he added.

Earlier on 27 February, BNP decided to hold its divisional assembly in Khulna in demand of free and fair elections, Begum Khaleda Zia's release and protest against stripping Bir Uttam title of Ziaur Rahman. Former mayoral candidates in six cities of the country will lead the divisional assembly.

BNP Vice-Chairman Barrister Shahjahan Omar Bir Uttam will present as the chief guest while its senior vice-chairman Shamsuzzaman Dudu, Vice-chairman Nitai Roy Chowdhury and Joint Secretary General Moazzem Hossain Alal will also present as the special guests.
