No scope for deployment in student union elections: Army
The polls can be conducted peacefully and in a festive atmosphere under the direct support of existing law enforcement agencies and the overall supervision of university administrations, says the army.
The Bangladesh Army has dismissed media reports suggesting its deployment in the upcoming central student union elections at various public universities.
In a statement issued on Bangladesh Army's official Facebook page yesterday, the army said it has not received any directive from the government to play a role in these elections and clarified that there is no scope for such involvement in the future.
The statement further noted that the polls can be conducted peacefully and in a festive atmosphere under the direct support of existing law enforcement agencies and the overall supervision of university administrations.
Extending its goodwill, the army wished success for the upcoming student union elections.
On 26 August, Chief Returning Officer of the Ducsu Election Commission Professor Mohammad Jasim Uddin, at a discussion on the code of conduct for candidates, said the Bangladesh Army will be deployed at seven points on the campus as a "striking force" during the Ducsu election to ensure a fair and secure voting process.
He further stated that army personnel will take custody of the ballot boxes until the results are officially announced.
Earlier, the Jahangirnagar University administration also sought army deployment for overall security, centring the Jahangirnagar University Central Students' Union (Jucsu) and hall union elections 2025.
