No alternative to boosting police cyber capacity: IGP
A 10-day training course will train 332 police officers in phases, who will later train field-level investigators handling cybercrime cases.
There is no alternative to strengthening the skills and capabilities of police personnel to combat cybercrime, Inspector General of Police (IGP) Md Ali Hossain Fakir said today (13 September).
"Criminals are misusing technology to commit cyber fraud, online financial crimes, data theft, hacking, online harassment and digital extortion," he said while inaugurating a Training of Trainers course on cybercrime case investigation at Police Staff College Bangladesh in Mirpur.
The IGP said emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence, deepfakes, encrypted communication and cloud computing are creating new challenges for law enforcement agencies alongside new opportunities.

He said policing methods need to evolve to address the growing threat of cybercrime, making stronger investigative capabilities essential for modern law enforcement.
Addressing the participating officers, Ali Hossain Fakir said the course would help them develop both technical and training skills.
"The knowledge and skills gained through the training must be shared with other investigators. If you effectively train other investigators, the number of cybercrime case investigators in the police force will increase many times over," he said.
The IGP also called for regular training programmes of this kind and for training materials and modules to be updated regularly.
Police Staff College Bangladesh organised the 10-day course at the initiative of the Training Branch of Police Headquarters.
A total of 332 police officers will participate in the training course in phases. They will later train field-level investigators handling cybercrime cases.
