The government has imposed a ban on fireworks and sky lanterns as well as decided to keep the bars closed on New Year's Eve to maintain law and order and prevent disturbances.

"We have banned the sky lanterns [Fanush] and fireworks on 31st night," said Home Affairs Adviser Lt Col (retd) Jahangir Alam today (8 December).

He made the announcement while speaking to reporters after a meeting at the secretariat on law and order on the Christmas celebrations of 25 December and the New Year's celebration on 31 December.

Responding to a question, the adviser said, "We often witness disruptions among the youth on New Year's Eve. They often consume alcohol outdoors. You can guide them to avoid such behaviour, and they will act more responsibly."

"We will shut the bars around the city on the 31st night," he added.

No intrusion through borders will be tolerated: Home adviser

Addressing the issue of young people consuming alcohol, he stated, "It [alcohol] should be limited to indoor settings to avoid causing disruptions on the roads."
