Nearly 56,000 observers confirmed for polls: EC
A total of 1,994 candidates are contesting the polls, including 256 independent candidates
The Election Commission has said a total of 55,454 observers from 81 registered local organisations will be deployed to monitor the upcoming general election and the July Charter referendum.
According to a letter issued by the EC, undersigned by Assistant Director (Public Relations) Md Ashadul Haque, a total of 7,997 observers will be stationed at the central level, whilst 47,457 will be stationed locally ahead of the two votes.
Earlier, yesterday (25 January), the Election Commission briefed diplomats on the overall preparations for the 12 February election.
During the briefing, Election Commissioner Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah said 51 political parties are participating in the upcoming election.
A total of 1,994 candidates are contesting the polls, including 256 independent candidates, he added.
"Around 500 foreign observers will also monitor the election," he said.
He added that law enforcement duties will be carried out by 943,050 personnel from various forces.
Nearly 800,000 officials will perform election duties, he said, adding that these include 69 returning officers, 598 assistant returning officers, 42,779 presiding officers, 247,482 assistant presiding officers, and 495,764 polling officers.
In addition, about 15,000 officials will be responsible for postal voting, he added.
