NCP rejects reports of 'ideological alliance' with Jamaat
The youth-driven party, which contested the 13th national election as part of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, also said their relationship is currently at the coordination stage
The NCP has clarified its position on reports of an "ideological alliance" with Jamaat-e-Islami, saying no such decision has been made though the two parties have been working on several shared causes.
The youth-driven party, which contested the 13th national election as part of the Jamaat-led 11-party alliance, also said their relationship is currently at the coordination stage.
Speaking to The Business Standard, NCP Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary said, "We are working with Jamaat to tackle terrorism, extortion, and corruption. However, no party decision has been made regarding any ideological alliance."
Terming the reports of such an alliance as "misleading", NCP Member Secretary Monira Sharmin said there has been no new development.
"The news about an alliance with Jamaat is confusing. Nothing new has happened. Our position remains the same as it was before the election. There is no new dimension here," she said.
Criticising the role of the BNP, Monira alleged that the party has taken a negative stance since the day of the swearing-in ceremony.
"They want to implement reforms and the July Charter in their own way. This reflects their partisan narrowness," she said.
On political coordination over reforms, she added that Jamaat remains the only major force with which discussions can meaningfully continue.
However, NCP Joint Convenor Sarwar Tushar ruled out the possibility of an ideological alliance with Jamaat. "We have never said there will be an ideological alliance with Jamaat. There is no possibility of an ideological coalition. We have some common ground on reform issues, and we think this coordination should continue for now," he said.
