NCP activist escapes as 'buyers' open fire during motorcycle sale
Attackers flee with his bike
An activist of National Citizen Party (NCP) narrowly escaped injury after two men, posing as buyers, opened fire on him during a motorcycle sale in Gazipur today (8 January).
The attackers fled the scene with the motorcycle after the shooting, which took place around 12:30pm in the Jogitala area of the city.
Gazipur Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner (Crime) Md Taherul Haque Chauhan said police visited the scene immediately after receiving the report.
"Preliminary investigation suggests the incident was aimed at robbing the motorcycle. We are treating it seriously and have launched a drive to arrest the perpetrators," he said, adding that legal proceedings are underway.
The NCP activist, Md Habib Chowdhury (25), said he had advertised his used motorcycle for sale, following which two men contacted him expressing interest.
He said they met him in Jogitala, where the suspects asked to test-ride the motorcycle.
"After starting the vehicle, they attempted to flee at high speed. When I chased them, one of the riders opened fire while the other rode the motorcycle. The bullet missed me by inches, passing close to my ear.
The suspects then escaped with the motorcycle.
Reacting to the incident, NCP Central Joint Organising Secretary and NCP-nominated Gazipur-2 MP candidate Advocate Ali Naser Khan said the attack was a targeted attempt to kill an NCP worker under the guise of a motorcycle sale.
"Habib Chowdhury survived by sheer luck. None of those involved in the July movement are safe today," he said, issuing a 12-hour ultimatum to the administration to arrest those responsible.
