The Bangladesh Navy has rescued 18 fishermen who were stranded at sea for four days after their fishing trawler suffered engine failure in the Bay of Bengal.
The trawler, named Habiba, was found drifting approximately 25 nautical miles west of Maheshkhali yesterday (22 July) by naval warship Shaheed Farid during a routine patrol, according to a press release from the Navy's Chattogram base.
Upon noticing the Navy ship, the distressed fishermen signalled for help. The naval team quickly responded and discovered that the vessel had been adrift since 18 July due to engine failure.
The fishermen, all from Monpura in Bhola district, had been without food or clean water for several days. Navy personnel immediately provided them with emergency rations, drinking water, and primary medical assistance.
Once stabilized, the trawler and its crew were escorted safely to the Kutubdia coast. All rescued fishermen are reportedly in good health.
The crew expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Bangladesh Navy for saving their lives and reuniting them with their families.
The Navy said this operation reflects its continued commitment to ensuring maritime safety and protecting coastal livelihoods.
Regular patrols across the Bay of Bengal and coastal waters are conducted to support national maritime security, safeguard the blue economy, and prevent smuggling and illegal activities.
