Navy detains 11 with boat smuggling diesel, cement to Myanmar
The Bangladesh Navy intercepted the FB Ankita Annesha where a subsequent search led to the recovery of 1,000 litres of diesel and 650 bags of cement
Bangladesh Navy has detained 11 individuals and seized an engine-driven boat while they were attempting to smuggle a significant consignment of diesel and cement to Myanmar through the Bay of Bengal.
The operation was carried out yesterday (26 December) during a routine naval patrol near the Kutubdia outer anchorage area, according to a press release issued today (27 December).
Acting on intelligence regarding an organised smuggling ring operating via sea routes to evade customs, the Navy intensified patrols near the Saint Martin's Island and adjacent maritime zones.
During the patrol, the Bangladesh Navy ship Shahid Mohibullah detected a suspicious fishing boat, identified as FB Ankita Annesha, approximately 42 nautical miles off the Kutubdia lighthouse.
When naval personnel signalled the vessel to stop, it attempted to change course and flee. Following a pursuit, the Navy intercepted the boat. A subsequent search led to the recovery of 1,000 litres of diesel and 650 bags of cement.
Preliminary interrogation revealed that the 11 detainees were attempting to transport the goods to Myanmar to sell them at a higher profit. The seized boat, along with the contraband and the suspects, was later handed over to the Patenga Model Police Station for further legal proceedings.
Bangladesh Navy said it continues to conduct regular patrols and operations in maritime and coastal areas to protect sovereignty, ensure maritime security, and curb smuggling, terrorism, drug trafficking and other criminal activities at sea.
