35 Bangladeshi fishermen detained by Indian Coast Guard
The detained fishermen were brought to the Fraserganj fishing harbour by the ICG on Wednesday before being handed over to police at the Fraserganj Coastal Police Station for further action
At least 35 Bangladeshi fishermen have been detained and two of their fishing vessels seized by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) for allegedly fishing illegally inside India's exclusive economic zone (EEZ), according to a statement from India's defence ministry.
The incident occurred earlier this week in waters governed by the Maritime Zones of India (Regulation of Fishing by Foreign Vessels) Act, 1981.
According to a report by The Economic Times, the boats and their crew were intercepted on Tuesday and were later handed over to the Marine Police in Fraserganj on Wednesday to initiate legal proceedings.
"The crew of Bangladeshi boats failed to produce any valid authorisation or permit for fishing inside the Maritime Zones of India. The fishing gear and catch with around 500 kg indicated active fishing operations inside Indian waters," the Ministry of Defence said.
The defence ministry added that the action underscores the Indian Coast Guard's resolve to safeguard maritime interests.
"The apprehension highlights the ICG's steadfast commitment in protecting India's maritime interests, preventing illegal fishing and ensuring the security of Indian fishermen operating in the region," the statement said.
The detained fishermen were brought to the Fraserganj fishing harbour by the ICG on Wednesday before being handed over to police at the Fraserganj Coastal Police Station for further action.
