Mother, daughter killed in Naf River speedboat capsize

A mother and her five-year-old daughter died after a speedboat capsized at the Naf River estuary on the Teknaf-Saint Martin's Island route this afternoon (1 December).
The victims were identified as Moriyam Khatun, 35, and her daughter Mahima, 5, residents of Purba Para in Saint Martin's Island.
According to Saint Martin Union Parishad Chairman Fayezul Islam, the speedboat was heading to Teknaf's Shah Pari Island when it overturned in the Naikhongdia area after being hit by strong waves.
"A rescue speedboat rushed to the spot after receiving the news and brought the passengers ashore. The mother and daughter died in the incident," he said.
Bashir Ahmed, the brother of the deceased Moriyam, said, "I was returning to Teknaf with my sister and niece. A sudden wave caused the boat to flip. Their bodies were later recovered. My sister was supposed to travel to Dhaka."
Emergency department physician Dr Asif Alvi at Teknaf Upazila Health Complex said the mother and daughter were brought in dead. "Two others injured in the same incident received primary treatment," he added.
Acting Teknaf Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Assistant Commissioner (Land) Rakib Hasan Chowdhury said, "Two people died in the accident. An investigation is underway to determine how the speedboat overturned."
