Mitford murder: Two more remanded, three sent to jail after confession

A Dhaka court has placed two more suspects on a three-day remand each in connection with the brutal murder of scrap trader Lal Chand alias Md Shohag, 39, in front of Sir Salimullah Medical College Mitford Hospital in the capital.
Following a hearing today (23 July), Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Atikur Rahman passed the order after police produced the two suspects, Md Parvez and Md Zahirul Islam, before the court with a 10-day remand plea for each.
Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Moniruzzaman, who is also the case investigation officer, presented the duo before the court. However, no defence lawyers appeared on behalf of the accused during the hearing.
Earlier in the day, police arrested Parvez and Zahirul from Keraniganj. With their arrest, a total of 11 individuals have now been held in connection with the murder.
Meanwhile, three other Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrates recorded confessional statements from additional suspects in the case.
Magistrate Md Sefat Ullah recorded the statement of accused Nannu, Magistrate Minhazur Rahman recorded that of accused Robin and Magistrate Sadekur Rahman took the statement of accused Rizwan.
Following the recordings, all three were sent to jail.
With this, a total of eight accused have now given confessional statements in connection with the murder.
According to the case statement, around 6pm on 9 July, a group of men, using a concrete boulder and sharp weapons, attacked and hacked to death Shohag near Gate No 3 of Mitford Hospital.
The following day, the victim's elder sister Manjuara filed the murder case at Kotwali Police Station against 19 named and 15-20 unnamed individuals.
Police also filed a separate case under the Arms Act in connection with the incident.
