Mirpur warehouse fire: Another body recovered after 12 days
The deceased has been identified as Marzia Sultana, daughter of Sultan Mia of Golla Rajapur village, under Dharmapasha upazila in Sunamganj district.
Twelve days after the devastating fire at a chemical warehouse and garment factory in Mirpur's Rupnagar, another body has been recovered from the debris of the factory today (26 October).
"As the chemical reaction plummeted over time, another dead body was recovered from the scene today. The body is now being taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital [DMCH]," Mohammad Maksuder Rahman, deputy commissioner (Mirpur division), told The Business Standard.
The deceased has been identified as Marzia Sultana, daughter of Sultan Mia of Golla Rajapur village, under Dharmapasha upazila in Sunamganj district.
"Marzia's body was recovered from beneath a table amid piles of burnt clothes on the third floor of the building," Inspector Mizan of Rupnagar Police Station said, adding that the body was brought to DMCH around 8:45pm.
Earlier on 14 October, a massive fire broke out in the Shialbari area of Mirpur's Rupnagar, reportedly originating from an illegal chemical warehouse. The blaze quickly spread to an adjacent multistorey building housing a garments factory, killing at least 16 people.
Fire Service and Civil Defence officials confirmed the death toll at a press briefing that evening, warning that the number of casualties could rise as the search continued.
Twelve firefighting units were dispatched to the scene and took several hours to bring the flames under control. Officials said investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the fire and to identify those responsible for the illegal storage of chemicals.
