Medical board advises against Khaleda Zia's immediate travel abroad: Dr Zahid
Her physical condition will determine when she can travel abroad, says Khaleda's personal physician
The medical board thinks that it is not appropriate for BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia to travel abroad at this moment, resulting in a delay in arranging her overseas treatment, her personal physician, Professor Dr AZM Zahid Hossain, said today (6 December).
"We have continued our highest-level efforts to arrange Khaleda Zia's treatment abroad, following the advice of the medical board. It is true that the Qatari air ambulance could not arrive due to a technical fault, and the medical board also felt it would not be appropriate to fly her at this time. This is the reason for the current delay," Dr Zahid said while briefing the media in front of Evercare Hospital.
He added that Khaleda Zia's physical condition will determine when she can be taken abroad for treatment.
"Our medical ambulance is fully prepared and ready whenever it becomes suitable," he said.
Dr Zahid said doctors from both Bangladesh and abroad are actively involved in Khaleda Zia's treatment, with acting BNP chairman Tarique Rahman supervising the process at all times.
Dr Zubaida Rahman is coordinating the medical efforts, he added.
Addressing circulating rumours on social media about Khaleda's treatment, he urged, "I request everyone not to spread misinformation or mislead the public."
He also expressed optimism about her recovery, saying, "Allah has cured her from even more serious conditions in the past. The medical board is confident that Begum Khaleda Zia will overcome her current physical complications. We are fully prepared to take her abroad when the time is right."
The former prime minister has long been suffering from various ailments, including liver cirrhosis, arthritis, diabetes, and kidney, lung, heart and eye problems.
On 23 November, Khaleda left her Gulshan residence, Firoza, for Evercare Hospital at around 7:30pm and has been receiving treatment there since then.
Earlier, on 8 January this year, Khaleda travelled to London. Upon arrival, she was admitted to the London Clinic, a private hospital, where she remained under the care of renowned specialists Prof Patrick Kennedy and Prof Jennifer Cross for 17 days.
From 25 January, she received treatment and stayed at the London residence of her eldest son Tarique. The BNP chief then returned to Dhaka on 6 May after four months in the UK.
