A Dhaka court has sentenced an individual to life imprisonment for abducting and raping a ninth‑grade student of Viquarunnisa Noon School and College in the city's Kamrangirchar area in 2017.
Dhaka Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal‑4 Judge Munshi Md Moshiar Rahman delivered the verdict today (14 October), said Rashedul Islam, the bench assistant for the tribunal.
"Along with the life term, the convict, Anis Ahmed Neel, was fined Tk1 lakh, with one year's imprisonment in default. The court also sentenced Anis to 14-year rigorous imprisonment and fined him Tk50,000 more on the charge of abducting the victim," he said.
Rashedul added that the sentence will be enforced once the fugitive convict either surrenders or is arrested.
The court also issued an arrest warrant against him.
According to the case documents, the convict first contacted the victim through Facebook and repeatedly harassed her.
On 30 October 2017, while she was on her way to coaching class in Azimpur, Anis and several unidentified individuals forced her into a vehicle near Borogram Chairman Bari area in Kamrangirchar. She was then taken away against her will and raped.
The victim's father filed a case with Kamrangirchar Police Station the same day and police later rescued the girl from Dinajpur.
On 31 March 2018, Sub‑Inspector Mamun Hossain submitted a charge sheet against Anis under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000.
A total of nine witnesses testified in the case on different hearing dates.
