Magazine 'Nature Insights' launched with focus on natural rights and sustainability

'Nature Insights', a new magazine dedicated to environmental restoration and sustainable futures, was officially launched at Mermaid Beach Resort in Cox's Bazar yesterday (25 May).

The launch of the monthly magazine, backed by Change Initiative and the Institute of Strategy and Tactics Research (ISTR), marks a pivotal moment in reshaping global discourse on environmental justice and human responsibility.

During the inauguration, the team members, including Tahsin Tabassum, Mohammad Rezaul Haque Heron, and Najifa Alam Torsa, were present among others.

The inaugural issue of Nature Insights presents a compelling argument that natural rights—recognising ecosystems, rivers, forests, and species as rights-bearing entities—must be enshrined at the heart of governance.

By placing these rights at the center of policy and law, the publication argues, we can transform global systems, restore ecosystems, and protect vulnerable communities from the escalating threats of climate and ecological collapse.

A highlight of the issue is a feature article by Chief Editor M Zakir Hossain Khan, who explores "natural rights-led governance" as a necessary evolution in environmental policy. His analysis demonstrates how granting legal standing to nature aligns human laws with ecological limits, fosters intergenerational justice, and challenges frameworks that currently treat nature as a resource to be exploited.

"This magazine is born from a need to reimagine how we relate to the natural world—not as something to dominate, but as a partner in our shared survival," said M Zakir Hossain Khan. "We believe the path to true justice starts by honoring nature's right to exist, thrive, and regenerate."

The launch event convened environmental thinkers, artists, and advocates to celebrate the magazine's multidisciplinary approach. Through a blend of scientific research, policy perspectives, cultural exploration, frontline reporting, fictional narratives, and even cartoons, Nature Insights offers readers a rich tapestry of storytelling designed to inform, challenge, and inspire action.

Published in collaboration with Change Initiative and ISTR, Nature Insights aims to bridge disciplines, cultures, and geographies. Its mission is clear: to make environmental knowledge not only accessible and evidence-based but also emotionally resonant and actionable. Featured content ranges from reflections on Arctic ice melt and African forest conservation to interviews with frontline defenders and explorations of eco-art movements around the world.

Coinciding with the magazine's debut is the release of Khan's new book, Sovereignty for Nature, Survival for All: Natural Rights–Led Governance Towards a Sustainable Future. In it, he calls for a paradigm shift in global governance—granting rivers, forests, and ecosystems the same legal rights afforded to individuals and institutions. "Our goal is to inspire people to discover, analyze, and act," Khan added. "Nature Insights isn't about doom and despair. It's about hope, accountability, and real solutions."

The magazine's first issue also features environmental cartoons by emerging artists, cultural stories from the hills of Sajek, and in-depth reports on the legal, scientific, and ethical dimensions of protecting nature. Designed for a global audience, Nature Insights invites contributions from all corners of the world, encouraging an inclusive conversation about our shared responsibility to the planet. Nature Insights is now available in digital and print formats.
