Army conducts drives in Khagrachari, nabs 'terrorists'

Acting on specific intelligence, a special operation was conducted at around 6:00am today (15 August) under the leadership of Sindukchari Zone in Garitana area of Manikchari upazila in Khagrachhari district.
During the raid, a local terrorist, Ismail Hossain, was arrested with two locally made guns (LGs) and five rounds of ammunition, according to an ISPR press release.
Later, based on information provided by the arrested Ismail Hossain, another operation was conducted immediately in the Shantinagar area of Khagrachhari to arrest top terrorist Kongchai Marma, it added.
Sensing the presence of security personnel, Marma fired one round of bullet from the rooftop of a three-storey building at the forces, the release said, adding, at one stage, finding no way to escape, he jumped from the roof.
Marma was then rescued and rushed to the nearest hospital and the on-duty doctor declared him dead, it said, adding, it is believed that his death resulted from injuries sustained in the fall.
From the scene, the release said, security forces recovered one 9mm pistol, five LGs, 21 cartridges, and 18 pistol rounds, the release said.
"The autopsy of the deceased is currently underway," it said.
According to the release, Kongchai Marma had long been involved in various acts of terrorism in the Khagrachhari area, creating a reign of terror. He was accused of multiple abductions.
It said the Bangladesh Army is committed to maintaining peace, security, and stability in the hill tracts regions and such anti-terror operations will continue.
