Karachi Press Club condemns attacks on Bangladeshi media
Expressing solidarity with journalists in Bangladesh, the Karachi Press Club called on the relevant authorities to ensure the safety of media professionals and to carry out transparent and impartial investigations into the attacks
The Karachi Press Club (KPC) has expressed deep concern and strongly condemned the recent wave of violent attacks, vandalism and arson targeting major media outlets in Bangladesh, including Prothom Alo and The Daily Star.
In a press release issued on Sunday (21 December), the KPC also voiced serious alarm over the harassment of New Age Editor Nurul Kabir.
The KPC said it was particularly troubled by reports that, following the transition to the interim government in Bangladesh, "more than 100 journalists have been detained on serious charges without due process."
"We believe that the detention of journalists without trial creates a climate of fear and stifles the essential voice of the public. We demand the immediate and unconditional release of all journalists currently held in custody," it said.
The release also added that attempts to silence the media through physical violence, legal intimidation, or harassment are direct violations of fundamental human rights, the constitutional right to freedom of expression, and the principles of the rule of law.
Expressing solidarity with journalists in Bangladesh, the Karachi Press Club called on the relevant authorities to ensure the safety of media professionals and to carry out transparent and impartial investigations into the attacks.
The perpetrators, it said, must be brought to justice to prevent further erosion of democratic values in the region.
The statement was signed by KPC President Fazil Jamili and Secretary Sohail Afzal Khan.
