The government has taken the murder of Dhaka University student Shahriar Alam Shammo very seriously and those responsible for the murder will be brought to justice, LGRD adviser Asif Mahmud Shojib Bhuiyan said today (15 May).

"Three individuals have already been arrested in connection with the murder of Shammo. The incident is being investigated thoroughly, and the perpetrators will be held accountable," Asif said in a Facebook post.

Asif Mahmud, also adviser of youth and Sports ministry, said, "Steps have been taken to transform the Suhrawardy Udyan from a place of fear to a safe and convenient open space for common people.

The government expects cooperation from the Dhaka University administration and students in this regard.

In another Facebook post, Asif Mahmud announced seven key decisions taken in a meeting between the Dhaka University administration and relevant authorities of Suhrawardy Udyan following Shammo's murder.

"One of the primary measures will be imposing a restriction on public access to the park after 8pm," he said.

Other decisions include - closure of the gate adjacent to TSC permanently, eviction of illegal shops, eradication of drug trade, and keep the park under neat and clean through a coordinated campaign.

Public Works Department, Dhaka North City Corporation, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), and the Department of Narcotics Control will be involved with the task.

For constant monitories, the adviser said, a dedicated committee will be formed under the Public Works Department in addition to arranging adequate lighting and CCTV cameras in the park.

The park will also have a dedicated police box and a structured management system like that of Ramna Park will be put in place.

Shahriar Alam Shammo, 25, hailing from Ullapara in Sirajganj, was a resident student of the Institute of Education and Research (2018-2019) with attachment of Sir AF Rahman Hall.

Shammo, the literary and publication secretary of the AF Rahman Hall unit of Chhatra Dal of Dhaka University, was stabbed to death by unidentified assailants on campus late Tuesday.

The murder triggered protests on Dhaka University campus while Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal launched demonstrations and demanded immediate arrest of the perpetrators.

Images of Sammya in the July uprising were circulated widely on social media. Public grief accompanied by condemnation outpoured in the social media on the death.
