Confirming the death, Nawabganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mominul Islam said police went to arrest Amjad Hossain at 4am as he was facing a warrant.
"When no one opened the door, the team returned without making an arrest. Shortly afterward, locals informed police of Amjad's death over the phone," he said.
Sub-inspectors Rajibul Islam and Delwar Hossain, who were part of the team, said they did not enter the house during the raid.
"We need to wait for the autopsy report to determine the cause of death," said the OC.
According to police and local sources, officers from Nawabganj Police Station went to Amjad's house with an arrest warrant in a cheque fraud case for which he had been sentenced to one year in prison. As they could not locate him, the police left without making an arrest.
Family members said Amjad left the house shortly after the police vehicle departed. They assumed that he had gone to the mosque for Fajr prayers. However, around 5am, locals found him lying unconscious in a nearby field and informed his family.
He was rushed to the Nawabganj Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.
Nawabganj police later visited the house for further inquiry.
Amjad's eldest daughter, Asha Akhter, claimed to have noticed injury marks on his face and around his eyes, saying, "I can't say if he was murdered, but something is not right."
