Jamaat expresses discontent over lack of consultation on parliament chair nomination
Speaking in parliament, Bangladesh Taher thanked Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for the nomination and said the opposition would fully support the proposal.
Syed Abdullah Muhammad Abu Taher, nayeb-e-ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami today (12 March) expressed the opposition's dissatisfaction over the lack of consultation before nominating the chair to preside over the House.
Speaking in parliament, Bangladesh Taher thanked Prime Minister Tarique Rahman for the nomination and said the opposition would fully support the proposal.
"I would like to thank the prime minister. The person he has proposed as the speaker of this great parliament is a very decent and veteran politician," Taher said.
Taher added that he is trusted and respected by the public, regardless of political affiliation.
"As the opposition, we fully support the honourable prime minister's proposal," he said.
"The process could have been even more constructive had the prime minister or a government representative held prior discussions with the opposition beforehand, we would have accepted the proposal with great enthusiasm," he said.
Abu Taher expressed hope that in future similar matters would involve dialogue between the ruling party and the opposition before decisions are finalised, noting that such discussions would help improve the parliamentary environment and strengthen democratic practices.
"Having said that, we once again express our appreciation for the decision. Overall, we are pleased to extend our support and thanks for the proposal," he added.
