Jamaat chief calls on expatriate Bangladeshis for ‘yes’ vote in referendum, rejection of corruption
Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Shafiqur Rahman has urged expatriate Bangladeshis to exercise their voting rights in the upcoming national election and referendum scheduled for 12 February, calling the vote a "sacred responsibility" for guiding the country in the right direction.
In a statement posted on his verified Facebook page on Thursday (22 January) night, Shafiqur Rahman said voters would cast "two valuable votes" on election day — one in the parliamentary election and another in the referendum.
Referring to the referendum, the Jamaat chief said it aims to reform what he described as a governance system that has deteriorated over the past 54 years, leading to corruption and misrule.
He urged voters who seek reform and change to vote "Yes" in the referendum.
Addressing the parliamentary election, Shafiqur Rahman called for the rejection of individuals and forces allegedly linked to corruption and misgovernance.
He said the election should be used to build a Bangladesh based on justice, fairness, public aspirations, and opposition to corruption and authoritarian practices.
The Jamaat ameer also acknowledged that all political parties have the right to seek votes, adding that voters could make informed decisions by reviewing political activities following July 2024.
He emphasised that voters would ultimately choose their preferred candidates and electoral symbols.
Shafiqur also said voting is not only a constitutional right but also a moral and national duty to ensure the country's future is placed on the right path.
