Three people, including two veterinary surgeons, were airlifted to Dhaka in a Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) helicopter after being seriously injured while treating a wounded wild elephant near the Bangladesh–Myanmar border in Cox's Bazar.
Md Shariful Islam, public relations officer of the BGB, said today (16 August) that the incident occurred yesterday (15 August) in the Baluchhara Dakkhin hill area of Rajarkul Thoinggyakata under Ramu upazila.
The elephant, earlier injured in a landmine explosion along the border, turned aggressive when the veterinary team attempted to administer treatment, leaving three critically injured.
The injured were identified as Dr Hatem Sazzat Md Julkarnaine, veterinary surgeon of Dulahazra Safari Park; Dr Md Mostafizur Rahman, veterinary surgeon of Gazipur Safari Park; and Md Atikur Rahman, member secretary of Save the Nature of Bangladesh's Cox's Bazar chapter.
"They were flown from Ramu Cantonment to Dhaka on a BGB helicopter for advanced medical care," said Shariful Islam.
"The force remains committed to not only safeguarding the border but also extending humanitarian support whenever needed," he added.
