IGP dismisses resignation rumours
Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam today (15 February) dismissed rumours of his resignation and confirmed he has not stepped down from his post despite reports circulating within the Ministry of Home Affairs and Police Headquarters.
He confirmed this information to The Business Standard via a WhatsApp message at 5:04pm.
When contacted regarding the matter, IGP Baharul Alam responded with a brief reply, "No," denying the resignation claims.
Earlier in January, Baharul Alam had submitted his official passport and applied for an ordinary passport, which had also sparked speculation in certain quarters.
According to Police Headquarters source, IGP was at his office from morning until noon yesterday (14 February) before heading to the Ministry of Home Affairs.
There, he attended a meeting on security preparations for International Mother Language Day on 21 February. It was after this meeting those rumours of resignation began to circulate.
Following the fall of the Awami League government on 5 August 2024, several changes were made to key administrative positions across the country. As part of that reshuffle, Baharul Alam was appointed IGP on 21 November that year.
He had previously retired from police service in 2020.
The interim government appointed him as IGP on a two-year contractual basis. Accordingly, his tenure is scheduled to expire on 21 November this year.
