Prothom Alo Editor Matiur Rahman has expressed hope that the BNP, if it comes to power, will demonstrate greater tolerance and a willingness to accept criticism.
Speaking at a views-exchange meeting today (21 December), Matiur Rahman said the believes that the upcoming period could be the most challenging in Bangladesh's past 50 years for the party forming the government.
The editor also reflected on the difficulties faced by the newspaper industry under various governments, noting that media outlets have consistently struggled with pressure and fear.
The views-exchange meeting with editors and senior journalists was held at a city hotel ahead of BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman's homecoming.
"The newspaper industry has faced difficulties for various reasons under all governments. Over the last 15-16 years, we endured the greatest fear and pressure under the authoritarian government. However, during the BNP's tenure, the environment was comparatively more comfortable," he said.

He described BNP as the country's largest political party, predicting that it could win the upcoming election by securing a significant number of votes.
"We hope BNP leaders will exercise humility and politeness if they come to power," he said.
