Measles crisis: 2 more children die in Barishal, hospitalisations surpass 4,400
109 new patients were admitted to government hospitals across the division.
Two more children died while undergoing treatment for measles symptoms at Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in 24 hours to this morning, bringing the total death toll in the division to 31.
One of the deceased was a 10-month-old child, while the other was seven months old, the office of the divisional health director confirmed this morning (9 May).
According to data provided by the Barishal Divisional Health Director's office this morning, 109 new patients were admitted to government hospitals across the division in the 24 hours till 8am today, taking the total number of cases to 4,464.
Among them, 3,560 patients have so far been discharged after being given treatment.
Of the new admissions, Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital recorded the highest with 43 cases.
Other cases were reported in Patuakhali (24), Barishal General Hospital (13), Barguna (11), and Bhola (10).
No new cases were found in Jhalakathi or Pirojpur during this period.
So far, Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital has recorded the highest number of fatalities with 18 deaths.
Six deaths were reported in Bhola, five in Barguna, and two in Jhalakathi.
Dr Mohammad Lokman Hakim, acting director of the Divisional Health Office, noted that the outbreak appears to be losing momentum.
"The impact of the vaccination campaign is beginning to show as the immunisation drive continues. We hope the number of infections will gradually drop to zero," he said.
