Harun-Shakil panel wins the DAB election
A total of 3,117 voters were enrolled in the DAB election, where 2,600 votes were cast
Professor Dr Harun Al Rashid and Assistant Professor and Dr Md Zahirul Islam (Shakil) have been elected president and secretary general, respectively, in the election of the Doctors Association of Bangladesh (DAB), a pro-BNP professional organisation of registered MBBS and BDS doctors in Bangladesh, yesterday (9 August).
The new leadership of this professional organisation was elected through direct voting by voters on Saturday. The voting was held from 1 pm to 5 pm at Will's Little Flower School and College in the capital's Kakrail area.
A total of 3,117 voters were enrolled in the DAB election, where 2,600 votes were cast.
Bijon Kanti Sarkar, adviser to the BNP chairperson, served as the Chief Election Commissioner in this election. He officially announced the election results after 12:30am today (10 August).
This was the first time an election was held for the "Super Five" positions. The positions are – president, senior vice president, secretary general, treasurer, and senior joint secretary general.
Previously, in 2019, candidates contested for Super Three positions.
Two panels were announced on the occasion of the election.
In the Harun-Shakil panel, Professor Dr Harun Al Rashid contested for the post of president, Dr Zahirul Islam Shakil for the post of secretary general, Dr Abul Kenan for the post of senior vice president, Dr Md Mehedi Hasan for the post of treasurer, and Dr AKM Khalequzzaman Dipu for the post of senior joint secretary general. This panel won all the posts.
On the other hand, in the panel of Aziz-Shakur, Professor Dr AKM Azizul Haque contested for the post of president, Dr Abdus Shakur Khan for the post of secretary general, Dr Saif Uddin Nisar Ahmed Tushar for the post of senior vice president, Dr Towhid Ul Islam Jan for the post of treasurer and Dr Abu Md Ahsan Firoz for the post of senior joint secretary general.
Professor Dr Harun Al Rashid, chairman of the National Medical Institute and Hospital, has been elected as president. He received 1369 votes. His opponent, Professor Dr AKM Azizul Haque, chairman of the Bangladesh Shishu Hospital Management Board, received 1202 votes.
For the position of secretary general, Assistant Professor Dr Zahirul Islam Shakil of the National Chest Disease Hospital and former DAB treasurer was elected with 1458 votes. His opponent, Professor Dr Abdus Shakur Khan of the Respiratory Department at Anwar Khan Modern Medical College, received 1079 votes.
Professor Dr Md Abul Kenan, director of the National Orthopedic Hospital, has been elected as senior vice president with 1330 votes. His opponent, Dr Saif Uddin Nisar Ahmed Tushar, additional registrar of BMU, received 1233 votes.
Dr Md Mehedi Hasan, a public health and nutrition specialist and former senior joint secretary of DAB, has been elected as treasurer with 1312 votes. His opponent, urologist Dr Towhid Ul Islam Jan, received 1259 votes.
Professor Dr AKM Khalequzzaman Dipu, an orthopedic surgeon, has been elected as Senior Joint Secretary with 1316 votes. His opponent, Dr Abu Md Ahsan Firoz, deputy registrar of BMU, received 1249 votes.
Of the two panels, Professor Dr Harun Al Rashid led DAB from 2019 to 2025. Dr Azizul Haque served as DAB's president from 2005 to 2011.
After winning the full panel, DAB's newly elected president, Professor Dr Harun Al Rashid, said, "First of all, I thank the Almighty Allah. The voters have elected me with their well-considered opinions. I express my gratitude to the doctors for placing their trust in the Harun-Shakil panel. We wish to move forward in the upcoming days with everyone's cooperation."
