Agriculture Minister Dr Abdur Razzak has said it is critical to create awareness to ensure nutritional security in the country.

"Nutritional security will be possible only if people, especially youths, are aware of nutrition. The power of youths must be harnessed. We can build a nutritious nation if we can involve youths in nutritional awareness, nutritious living practices and initiatives," said the minister while addressing the inaugural event of "Nutrition Olympiad 2020" as the virtual chief guest on Saturday.

However, in many cases, the poor cannot afford to buy sufficient nutritious food, which is why they must widen their income path and social security programmes must be strengthened, he added.

The Bangladesh Institute of ICT in Development (BIID) Foundation, Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition (GAIN), ICT Department, Nutrition Club jointly organised this year's virtual Olympiad, under the theme "Building a Nutritious Digital Bangladesh under the Leadership of Youth".

Abdur Razzak also said various initiatives will be taken under various sectoral policies, including "Food Security and Nutrition Policy 2020" and "National Nutrition Action Plan 2016-2025" with special emphasis on the nutrition sector.

He mentioned that the government is working to ensure nutritional security by implementing nutrition-sensitive agricultural policies and programmes.

Due to the Covid-19 epidemic, the Olympiad is being held online. Like previous years, the Nutrition Olympiad organised several nutrition-related competitions and programmes.
