72% Bangladeshis suffer from insomnia due to Covid-19: Survey
A recent survey has found that 72.6% Bangladeshis are suffering from insomnia during the coronavirus pandemic.
Covid-19 has a significant detrimental effect on the mental health and psychological well-being of the people of Bangladesh, according to the survey conducted by Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur and Western Sydney University, Australia.
The study was conducted a cross-sectional survey using an online platform conducted by Dr. Wazed Research and Training Institute, Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur and School of Science and Health, University of Western Sydney, Australia.

During the time of lockdown in different parts of Bangladesh in April 2020, a cross-sectional and self-administered online survey was conducted by using social media, where total participants were 10,660.
The study found that 91.4% of respondents were concerned about this epidemic situation. Among them, 72.6% of respondents suffered from insomnia, 61.7% respondents were upset and angry at the epidemic situation, and 83.5% respondents expressed frustration and apprehension about the future. 68.2% of respondents said that overall they were terrified of the epidemic situation and most (59.4%) respondents said that life had become meaningless to them.
The study has found that out of 10,660 respondents, males were (49.1%), whereas females and others were (50.4%) and (0.5%) respectively.
In addition, 61.8% of the respondents were between 18 - 26 years old and 58.4% of the respondents were employed full time or part time.
Some 33.9% of the respondents were residents of Dhaka. Overall, 80.2% of the respondents were living with their families and they admitted that they felt at least somewhat relieved to be living with their families in time of crisis. Among the respondents, 1,175 respondents said that they had already been able to take the test (Covid-19) and 29.20% of them reported being infected with the coronavirus.
The chief investigator of the study was the Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur.
