Hadi murder: Two prime suspects taken to Delhi by India's investigation agency
Yesterday, the NIA sought custody of the duo at the Bidhan Nagar sub-divisional judicial magistrate’s court in North 24 Parganas
India's National Investigation Agency (NIA) has taken into custody two prime suspects in the murder of Inquilab Mancha spokesperson Sharif Osman Hadi, after a court in Bidhan Nagar, West Bengal, granted transit remand.
The suspects – Faisal Karim Masud, the alleged shooter, and his associate Alamgir Hossain – were flown to Delhi last night (23 March). They are expected to be produced before an NIA special court there, reports Prothom Alo.
Yesterday, the NIA sought custody of the duo at the Bidhan Nagar sub-divisional judicial magistrate's court in North 24 Parganas. The court approved the plea, allowing the agency to interrogate them for investigation purposes.
Faisal and Alamgir were detained on 8 March from the Bangaon area near the Bangladesh-India border by West Bengal Police's Special Task Force (STF). They were initially arrested on charges of illegal entry and placed on a 14-day remand for questioning.
After the remand period, the court ordered 12 days of judicial custody. While being taken to court, Faisal told reporters, "I did not commit this act. I was not involved in such activities."
On 12 December at around 2:20pm, assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on Hadi, leaving him critically injured with gunshot wounds to the head and below the right ear.
He was initially taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital and later shifted to Evercare Hospital, Dhaka. As his condition worsened, he was flown to Singapore by air ambulance on 15 December for advanced treatment. He died there on 18 December, about a week later, while undergoing treatment.
Following the shooting, a case was filed with the Paltan Police Station on 14 December on charges of attempted murder, which was later converted into a murder case after Hadi's death.
Law enforcement agencies have identified Faisal as the shooter in the attack on Hadi. Police and the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) said Faisal's associate, Alamgir Hossain, was riding the motorcycle used in the attack.
On 6 January, police submitted a charge sheet against 17 accused.
