Green chilli price doubles within a week

Green chilli has become one of the hottest commodities in the kitchen market after its price doubled this week.

Last Friday, green chilli was sold for Tk100 per kg, but the prices have gone up to Tk200 this week in different kitchen markets throughout Dhaka. On the first week of July, the commodity was being sold for Tk40 only.

Voicing her reaction, Aklima Khatun – a housewife from the Hatirpool area – said: “Green chilli is one of the most important ingredients for cooking. We are bound to buy it for any price. Our suffering from price hike of essential commodities never ends.

“I am urging the government to take necessary steps for curbing the price hike of essentials.”

The prices of various types of vegetables have also gone up compared to the previous week. However, the prices of onion, garlic and ginger have dropped slightly.

Visiting different kitchen markets in Jurain, Gendaria and Hatirpool, The Business Standard found that various types of vegetables such as okra, pointed gourd and bitter gourd were being sold for Tk40 to Tk60 per kg, compared to Tk30 to Tk50 last week.

According to wholesalers from Karwan Bazar, torrential rain over the past few days has destroyed much of the vegetable harvest and wastage during transportation is also a factor in the sudden price hike.

The price of eggs remains stable in kitchen markets as a dozen of eggs are being sold for Tk120, same as the previous week’s price. Several wholesalers said the price of eggs will drop by around Tk6 by next Saturday.

The price of broiler chicken has dropped from Tk145 to Tk125 per kg this week. The price of various types of fishes has gone up slightly.
