Govt reviewing Private University Act to allow foreign universities to operate in Bangladesh
Milon said the initiative would create opportunities for Bangladeshi students to receive education of international standards
The government is reviewing the Private University Act to allow internationally recognised foreign universities to operate in Bangladesh, Education Minister ANM Ehsanul Hoque Milon said.
He shared the information during a meeting with Canadian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Ajit Singh at his office in the capital today (8 March).
According to the education ministry, the meeting discussed ways to strengthen cooperation between Bangladesh and Canada in education, skill development and technology-based learning.
During the discussion, the minister said the government is examining the existing framework of the Private University Act to include foreign universities in Bangladesh's higher education system.
He added that maintaining proper academic standards and infrastructure would remain a priority if foreign institutions are allowed to operate in the country.
Milon said the initiative would create opportunities for Bangladeshi students to receive education of international standards.
He also welcomed partnerships that support capacity building, professional training and knowledge exchange, adding that stronger international cooperation could help accelerate Bangladesh's human resource development.
Both sides also discussed the growing demand for quality education in Bangladesh and explored opportunities for deeper collaboration between institutions in the two countries.
Skill development and the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) system were also discussed.
Canadian representatives said Canada is already supporting efforts to strengthen Bangladesh's TVET system through partnerships with international organisations, including the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the World Bank.
High Commissioner Ajit Singh assured continued Canadian cooperation in Bangladesh's education and human resource development initiatives.
Both sides agreed to continue discussions at the technical level to develop collaborative projects in education, skill development and technology exchange.
