Govt, private institutions suspend programmes as state mourning to be observed for Hadi
Similarly, Dhaka University authorities have postponed the admission test of the Faculty of Science
Several government and private institutions have suspended their previously scheduled programmes for today (19 December) as the nation will be observing a state mourning for Osman Hadi.
On Thursday, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus announced a one-day state mourning for today to mark the untimely death of Hadi, who succumbed to his bullet injuries in Singapore on Thursday night.
The institutions announced the suspension through press releases, notices published on their websites, and posts on social media.
In a press release, the Ministry of Posts, Telecommunications, and Information Technology said the recruitment examination of the Posts and Telecommunications Division scheduled for today has been postponed due to unavoidable reasons.
The ministry said the revised date of the examination will be announced later through its website and via SMS to candidates.
Similarly, Dhaka University authorities have postponed the admission test of the Faculty of Science. The new date of the examination will be announced later.
The Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation (BSCIC) has postponed a workshop titled "Challenges and Way Forward for the National Economy" that it was scheduled to organise.
Among private institutions, the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has postponed a roundtable discussion on COP30.
Likewise, the Bangla daily Bonik Barta has announced the postponement of its programme to honour distinguished individuals. ActionAid has also suspended its media reception programme.
Sources said that in addition to these events, many other institutions have either postponed or cancelled their programmes, while some organisations have also limited their regular activities.
When contacted to learn the reasons behind the postponements, a senior official of one institution, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, "The decision was taken considering the safety of guests, participants, and organisers."
"A large gathering is expected at Hadi's janaza today, and vehicular movement on several roads may remain suspended for certain periods. There are also concerns that protests may emerge from among participants attending the janaza," he added.
"All these factors were taken into account before suspending today's programme. Besides, a state mourning has been declared for the day," the official said.
