The government has formed a committee to examine reports submitted to the chief adviser by commissions and committees recommending salary increases for employees across different sectors.
The committee will review the proposals and suggest further action to the government. It is headed by the secretary of the Cabinet Division and includes seven other secretaries along with the Comptroller and Auditor General.
According to sources from the Cabinet Division, Members include the senior secretary of the Ministry of Public Administration, the secretary of the Ministry of Defence, the finance secretary, the secretary of the Secondary and Higher Education Division, the secretary of the chief adviser's office, the secretary of the Health Services Division, the secretary of the Law and Justice Division, and the Comptroller and Auditor General.
A gazette regarding the committee is expected to be published soon, sources said.
Earlier, the government had set up the National Salary Commission 2025, the Bangladesh Judicial Service Pay Commission 2025, and the Armed Forces Salary Committee 2025. These bodies have already submitted their reports to the chief adviser.
The ninth National Salary Commission, led by former finance secretary Zakir Ahmed Khan, was formed on 27 July last year. It submitted its report to chief adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus on 21 January.
The commission recommended a 100% to 147% increase in government employees' salaries. Under its proposal, the minimum salary at grade 20 would be Tk20,000, while the maximum at grade 1 would be Tk160,000. It also suggested maintaining 20 grades in the pay scale.
Implementing these recommendations would require an additional expenditure of Tk1.06 trillion. The newly formed committee will now examine the reports and provide recommendations to the government on the next steps.
