Govt forms 7-member committee to expedite trials of July Uprising killings
An additional secretary of the Law and Justice Division will head the committee.

The Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs has announced the formation of a seven-member committee to ensure the smooth and speedy prosecution of killings and other serious criminal cases filed in connection with the July Uprising.
According to a notification issued today (8 September), the committee will be headed by an additional secretary of the Law and Justice Division.
The committee members will include a representative from the Ministry of Home Affairs, a representative from the Bangladesh Police, a member from a martyr's family nominated by the July Martyrs' Memorial Foundation, a human rights activist nominated by the law ministry, a lawyer nominated by the July Martyrs' Memorial Foundation, and a deputy solicitor from the Law and Justice Division, who will serve as the member secretary.
The committee's terms of reference include collecting a comprehensive list of all cases related to murder and other serious crimes, identifying and addressing any issues in the prosecution of cases where charge sheets have been submitted, and regularly updating the victims' families and the public on the progress.
It will also submit recommendations to the government to ensure the safety of victims and witnesses.
The notification said that the trials of murder cases filed with the International Crimes Tribunal are already proceeding smoothly and expressed hope that the newly formed committee's actions will also ensure a fair and efficient trial for cases in conventional criminal courts.
