Govt expects neutral, responsible role of media: Mahfuj Alam

Information and Broadcasting Adviser Mahfuj Alam today said the government expects a neutral and responsible role from the mass media.
The mass media must play an effective role in countering rumours and propaganda, the adviser said at an iftar mahfil and view-exchange meeting, organised by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting at the Tathya Bhaban in the city's Circuit House Road.
He also said, "Constructive criticism from the media helps the government to make the right decisions…The media should also publicise the government's positive steps along with constructive criticism of the government."
Mahfuj said the government has set up the Media Reform Commission to establish discipline in the media.
"The government will take initiatives for media reform as per the recommendations of the commission," he added.
He sought cooperation of all concerned including media owners and journalists in media reform.
Secretary of the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting Mahbuba Farzana, owners and editors of print and electronic media and officials of the press wing of the chief adviser were present at the iftar mahfil.
