Govt to ensure fearless environment for media: Information minister
Swapan further emphasised that the primary goal of the media is to deliver authentic information to the people, and all issues will be resolved in light of that principle.
Zahir Uddin Swapan, the newly appointed minister for Information and Broadcasting, stated today (18 February) that the new government is committed to ensuring a fearless environment for the media.
Addressing the question of fearless journalism during a courtesy meeting with journalists at the Secretariat, the minister shared that, as a formerly persecuted political activist himself, he is well aware of the mental pressure caused by fear and intimidation.
"It is not desirable for those working in a respected profession like the media to remain under constant surveillance," he remarked, adding that Prime Minister Tarique Rahman plans to prioritise media freedom.
Consequently, he assured, a fearless environment for the media will be established in the country.
In response to a question regarding the spread of propaganda and rumours on social media before and after the elections, the minister acknowledged that the advancement of information technology has presented a new global challenge.
"The power of technology has created opportunities, but it has also created challenges. We must move forward with careful deliberation on this matter," he stated.
Swapan further emphasised that the primary goal of the media is to deliver authentic information to the people, and all issues will be resolved in light of that principle.
The information minister expressed gratitude on behalf of the new government to all those associated with the media, journalists, policymakers, media entrepreneurs, and their families.
He noted that during the recent political movements and the long path of struggle, the role played by the media was in no way lesser than that of activists on the streets.
"Media platforms were fields of movement themselves. Just as we are appraising our fellow comrades, the media will be honoured with the same respect," he said.
Zahir Uddin Swapan informed of a cabinet meeting scheduled for 3pm today, after which he will formally begin his duties. He noted that the day's meeting was primarily to exchange pleasantries.
